The History of 822 George Street, Chippendale
After being acquired by the Williams brothers in 1905, construction began on 822 George Street.
By 1910, the grand seven-storey building was completed, and as one of the tallest commercial buildings in Sydney at the time, it became a major landmark in the city. With large showroom windows and its classical facade, it was a beauty.
After surviving a mighty fire in 1913, the building was rebuilt and continued to house The Williams Brothers motor trade for many decades.
When the 1950s rolled around, the building welcomed more diverse commercial tenants and enterprises, a reflection of Sydney’s ever-changing business landscape.
By the 1980s, 822 had become the home for an eclectic mix of retail stores, corporate offices, bustling cafes, and even a recording studio.
That brings us back to today.
While the building has seen some extensive restorations over the years, you can still feel the depth of history in the walls.
